Bennett’s Road House

A Legacy Reimagined: A Family Cabin Transformed

Designed for a family of three, this renovation and addition began with a small lakeside cabin built decades ago by the homeowner’s grandfather. Because the family’s connection to the original structure and its setting was so strong, the decision was made to retain the cabin and make it the heart of the new home rather than remove and rebuild.

The existing building was reworked to strengthen its relationship to the water. The interior plan was opened up, the roof was removed and replaced to introduce a vaulted ceiling, and the new volume brings more daylight into the main living spaces. A former exterior deck became the location of a new kitchen, improving flow and creating a brighter anchor for daily life. New windows and an open staircase enhance views and circulation, while the original foundation and much of the existing framing were preserved to reduce waste and maintain the building’s character.

All new additions were placed on the side opposite the pond, allowing the original cabin to remain visually dominant on the water’s edge. This new wing includes a garage with an office/guest suite above—designed to comfortably accommodate long family visits and potentially serve as a future home for aging parents. A dedicated woodshop was added beside the garage, linked by an elevated deck that creates a sheltered workspace and ties the components together.

A new central entrance sits between the old and new structures, bridging the height difference between the two-storey addition and the split-level cabin. Nearly all interior millwork was crafted by one of the homeowners in the new woodshop, including the cabinetry and stairs, giving the project a deeply personal layer of craft and continuity.
